Juice Forsyth – Product Recall
Batch Code: 1036
We have had reports of our older branded cans of Juice Forsyth (Gyle: 1036, BBE: 23/07/2024 – As found on the bottom of the can) pouring with excessive carbonation, bulging the can, and even bursting in some instances.
After investigating the cause of the issue, we have concluded that this was likely due to fruit pulp carryover into a small part of the batch. We believe that these fruit cells may have released a small amount of unfermented sugar into the beer, which the tiny amount of yeast present has then subsequently fermented. This creates additional CO₂ which at best, can cause a frothy product, but at worst, can cause pressures unsuitable for storage in aluminium cans. Despite our confidence that this is only isolated to a small part of the batch, because of the potential risk we have decided that the prudent thing to do is withdraw and recall this product.
To manage exposure to this risk, we have taken the following steps. From September 2023 we began:
1. Using a food safe steriliser known as Potassium Sorbate in all beers that contain fruit. This inhibits the growth of wild yeast and mould. This also kills our brewer’s yeast and makes refermentation impossible.
2. Adding the fruits used in Juice Forsyth at the beginning of the fermentation thereby ensuring extra time and access for the fermentation of all sugars.
We’ve learned from this experience though, and it has stressed the importance of enforcing our quality control processes for not only beers currently in the brewery but for those that have been released from the brewery too, which will now be maintained with much more rigidity.
We are now asking that any customers who still have cans of Juice Forsyth (Gyle: 1036, BBE: 23/07/2024) store and dispose of them safely. If you have a can, we advise storing this in a cool environment (a fridge is perfect). To safely dispose of the can, we advise:
1. Wear gloves
2. Submerge the inverted can in water (a full sink is perfect)
3. Carefully open the can with the ring pull facing away from you. Once any initial pressure has been released and you’re confident it’s appropriate to do so, continue to empty the can.
4. Photograph the can, as well as the bottom of the can clearing displaying the Gyle and BBE numbers and send this to Sales@brewyork.co.uk for details on how to obtain replacement product(s). Once received, we will issue a coupon for use on our website to cover the cost of the can, as well as a little extra on us as an apology.
We are truly sorry for any inconvenience caused by this. We take great pride in the quality of our products, and in this instance, our high standards have not been met. This is not acceptable, and we are taking all necessary measures to ensure that this does not happen again in the future.
Thank you,
Lee Grabham, Co-Founder & Production Director
