The long and winding road.

Well it’s been a long few months in the land of Brew York and there certainly has been plenty going on. So much in fact that we overlooked our regular blog telling you lovely people just what’s been going on. You may well know most of it if you were party to the many events, openings and beer launches that happened but if you weren’t then here’s a brief run down of what has been going on at Brew York recently.

And God decreed let there be Beer Hall, and lo did they see that it was good.

First and foremost we have finally opened the Beer Hall to the public. A long time in the planning and creating this 200+ patrons venue is tagged neatly onto the side of our existing Tap Room and Brewery. We bought what was the old York Boxing Club’s building a whilke back and have painstakingly been working on it to convert it into what we hope will be the biggest and best venue in the area to have a great time whilst supping on our beer.
With 40 taps pumping out a wide variety of brews we are hoping this will swift become every hop-head’s dream venue in York and the surrounding area. Twenty of those taps will be taken over with our very own beer but that still leaves a further twenty taps that will be guest lines and we have already had some fantastic breweries involved from the likes of Lervig to Hardywood, Northern Monk to Magic Rock and there are even more exciting breweries to come!

In-house Kitchen

The one thing that many of you have been crying out for at our venue was what we installed next. A custom built in-house kitchen. Food was what was needed in our venue if we were to keep you guys fed enough to keep you going trying all those 40 beers, so we built it. And in doing so we created a spot for one of York’s finest street food vendors to set up shop in a permanent position, Street Cleaver purveyor of some of the finest Ramen and Asian dishes this side of the far east came into the fold with his take on an imbibers classic; burger & fries.
Running under the in-house name of Born To Lose Burger Kitchen, Mark is creating not your standard burger and fries these are high end artisan style ones. The burgers are made from daily ground local beef and the buns are freshly baked every day. Sides are not your standard fayre either, yes you have the basic fries but then you can add kimchi to these, or have kimchi mac n cheese, or Asian inspired beef short rib all made with love, care and plenty of Asian spices.

Extending the Taps

It’s not just the new Beer Hall that got a new face, the Tap Room is in the process of being expanded too. Very soon the tap wall will be extended from 16 lines to a full 20 lines enabling more cask ales to be pulled through so all you cask-heads can get your fix too! The Hoptail Lounge too will have an overhaul putting more seating and a permanent cocktail bar in, great for when you want to try that Tonkoko White Russian.

Being Hoptimist about it

Whilst we have been physically expanding in size at the brewery we have also been adding to our great range of beers. August saw the release of a fair few including the new addition to the Hoptimist range of Beers, Hoptimist Prime. We teamed up with the guys from Loka Polly in Wales to bring you a super hop bomb DIPA featuring CTZ, Ekuanot and Simcoe T90 pellets finished with a first for us Citra, Mosaic and Simcoe Cryo pellets. Hitting the pumps at 9.5% this was certainly a big hitter but the flavours behind it were exceptional and it certainly was easier to drink than its ABV decreed.
Straight on the back of Hoptimist Prime we released Graptini Peach Bellini, a nod to our Hoptails that we make here and once more another collaboration, this time with the guys at Abbeydale Brewing. A Peach Bellini inspired IPA made with lashings of Peach and White Grape juice in symphony with delightful Amarillo and Citra hops it certainly was superb to drink in the summer heat and at 6.6% it was surprisingly strong for such a subtle flavour. Not wanting to rest on our laurels Citamarindo followed quickly after that, a sour release where we looked to the East to create a Thai inspired beer filled with the upfront zestiness of lemongrass backed up by the sweet and sour finish of tamarind. At 5% this truly is one refreshing little number. Along with this we also released Whambo, a 4% American pale ale, which we also coupled with the Local Lord Mayors charity of the month giving £5 of every keg/cask sold to the York Blind & Partially Sighted Society, The Island and York Music Hub.

Back to the Future

With all that going on we are still pumped about things to come. We have the York CAMRA Beer & Cider Festival coming up with a great line up of beers on show. We also have a Tap Take Over at the Beer Hall with Wild Weather Brewing Co, another Tap Take Over this time at The Three Legged Mare. Also we have a collaboration brew set up with Wild Weather, Bone Machine and also hopefully Mad Hatter in October. Hopefully there will be a full website update which may even include a full beer and merchandise shop hosted by ourselves so you can buy all things Brew York!
